Science

At Berkhampstead, Science is all about asking 'How?', 'Why?' and 'What if?' We nurture curiosity and encourage children to explore the world around them through practical, hands-on learning.

Independence in Science

Enjoyment and involvement are at the heart of our Science lessons. Whenever possible, pupils conduct their own investigations, helping them to understand and retain key concepts. They develop strong experimental techniques, learn about lab safety, and work both independently and collaboratively on a variety of exciting projects.

Encouraging Curiosity

Science at Berkhampstead extends beyond the classroom. Pupils are encouraged to observe and question the science in their daily lives - whether exploring magnets at home, investigating plants in the garden, or identifying different materials around the house.

Active Science

Science at Berky is dynamic and engaging. Science Week is a highlight of the Summer Term, where children choose their own investigations. Popular choices include Save the Egg, Creating Volcanoes, and the Tallest Tower Challenge.

Trips and visits enrich our curriculum, bringing learning to life. Recent excursions have included the Cheltenham Science Festival, Cotswold Water Park and We The Curious, Bristol’s interactive science museum. Our Year 6 CSI workshop, led by a former police officer, demonstrates how forensic science is used to solve crimes - a thrilling and immersive experience!

Ready for the Next Step

By the time pupils leave Berkhampstead in Year 6, they have developed a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and investigative skills. They leave us ready to thrive with confidence in any secondary school science lab.
