At Berkhampstead, our commitment to the environment is driven by our two Eco-Committees - one in the Prep School and one in the Pre-Prep. These committees, made up of representatives from each class, work tirelessly to promote the careful use of our planet’s resources in school, at home and within the local community.
We were incredibly proud to achieve the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction in the Summer Term 2025. This prestigious recognition reflects the dedication of our pupils and staff and was awarded in part thanks to key initiatives such as promoting sustainable travel, planting 37 mature trees in the Pre-Prep playground, installing an EV charger, increasing bike rack provision, conducting a whole-school traffic survey and introducing a robust anti-idling policy.
Our passionate eco-warriors have also spearheaded numerous other green initiatives, including the installation of motion-sensor lights, the recycling of crisp packets, medicine blister packs and batteries, and improving paper recycling across the school. They are often seen armed with litter pickers, keeping our school grounds clean, and they enthusiastically contribute to school events, such as growing plants to sell at the Summer Festival.
We encourage all our pupils to lead greener lifestyles through the Berky Eco Pledge. Prep School children are challenged to complete five of the ten pledges, while Pre-Prep children aim to fulfil three from a simplified version. Central to this effort is the expectation for every child to “Spread the Word!” about sustainable living.
The pledge allows pupils to showcase their commitment to the environment through pictures and writing. Those who successfully complete it are proudly awarded a smart Eco-Warrior badge to wear on their blazers.
