WHY WILL BERKHAMPSTEAD SCHOOL OFFER A BETTER EDUCATION THAN A STATE PRIMARY SCHOOL?

HOW MUCH HOMEWORK WILL MY CHILD HAVE?
Reception: Reading books are sent home every day, and new phonics sounds go home weekly.
Years 1 & 2: Reading, weekly spellings, maths and occasional topic research.
Years 3 – 6: Homework in English, maths, science, and humanities, four days a week.
HOW BIG IS BERKHAMPSTEAD?
School: 255 children (ages 3–11).
Day Nursery, Pittville Circus: 194 children (ages 3 months–4 years).
Many children move across from the Day Nursery to join Kindergarten or Reception.

WHICH SCHOOLS DO CHILDREN TRANSFER TO AT THE AGE OF 11?
Children transition to local grammar, state, and independent schools, often earning grammar school places and scholarships. Independent advice and a Future Schools Information Evening support parents in making the best choice.
We have a good relationship with local senior school heads who visit during the year to take Prep assembly and meet with parents.
DO YOU TEACH VERBAL REASONING (VR) OR CRITICAL THINKING?
Yes, weekly Critical Thinking lessons cover Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, maths, and problem-solving.
WHAT PROVISION IS THERE FOR BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE?
Breakfast Club: 7.40 - 8.10am
Drop-off: From 8:10 am.
After-school: Clubs run until 4:30 pm, with Teatime Club available until 5:30 pm (includes tea).
WHAT IS THE SCHOOL UNIFORM – WHERE IS IT STOCKED?

Most items are available in our Second Hand Uniform Shop, which is run by our fantastic PTA volunteers.
WILL MY CHILD LEARN AN INSTRUMENT?
Music is integral to life at Berkhampstead. All children have specialist music lessons, and most Prep pupils learn at least one instrument. Opportunities include Samba Bands and ukulele in the Pre-Prep, and choirs and numerous ensembles in the Prep.
There are many different Music Clubs: the youngest children in the Day Nursery have ‘Berky Bears Music’, in the Pre-Prep there is always a Music Club - ‘Crash Bang Wallop’, Junior Choir or ‘Strum It’ - and in the Prep there are numerous ensembles for both beginners and more advanced players - string groups, jazz bands, choirs and percussion.
What Is Berkhampstead’s Approach to Sport?
At Berkhampstead, we believe sport is for everyone. Our inclusive approach ensures that every child, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to participate, develop skills, and enjoy being active.
Our curriculum promotes teamwork, resilience, and confidence while fostering a love for physical activity. We provide a broad range of opportunities, encouraging children to discover and excel in activities they enjoy.
With specialist PE teaching from age 3 and access to excellent facilities, our pupils gain a strong foundation in fitness and sportsmanship, preparing them for both competition and lifelong healthy habits.
WHAT ABOUT TECHNOLOGY?
Weekly computing lessons cover typing, coding, and eSafety. Devices like MacBooks, iPads, and Beebots enhance learning across subjects.
What is the food like?
Our caterers, Palmer & Howells, prepare fresh, nutritious meals daily, ensuring a balanced and delicious menu for our pupils. A healthy mid-morning snack keeps energy levels up, while lunch is served family-style, with a member of staff heading each table to encourage good manners and conversation.
Is there a Parent Teacher Association?
Yes, the Friends of Berkhampstead PTA organizes social and fundraising events, including Quiz Night, Festive Friday and the Summer Festival.
Do you cater for children with special needs?
Children are closely monitored, with tailored support provided by teachers and the SENCo. Strengths are nurtured, and challenges are addressed collaboratively with parents.
