Children aged 7-11 are taught by our subject specialists in the Prep department. Inspired by creative teaching, they enjoy positive relationships with staff who have the expertise to stretch and challenge.

Pupils make rapid progress as evidenced through the large numbers of places gained at senior schools with selective entry requirements.

Curriculum

At Berkhampstead, our core curriculum—English, Maths and Science—is enriched by exceptional teaching in a wide range of subjects, including Humanities, Modern Foreign Languages, Critical Thinking, Music, Art, Drama, Citizenship and Well-Being, Computing, PE and Games.

Our Critical Thinking lessons foster a problem-solving mindset, helping pupils develop outstanding reasoning skills. Those sitting the grammar schools’ entrance test approach it with confidence, while children preparing for independent schools’ scholarships and entrance exams benefit from our excellent preparation—reflected in our outstanding record of pupils gaining entry and awards to their chosen schools.

A twice-weekly ‘Carousel’ afternoon allows all Prep pupils to explore a variety of engaging activities such as Cookery, Design Technology, Samba, Yoga, Fun Spanish and Team Building, enriching their learning experience.

The curriculum is further enhanced by trips, visiting speakers, and collaborative events, including concerts and drama productions, ensuring a vibrant and well-rounded education for every child.

Leadership and Opportunity

At Berkhampstead, we prioritise responsibility, teamwork and helping others as core values. In Year 6, pupils take on leadership roles as Monitors, with many opting to pursue the prestigious Platinum Award. Inspired by the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, this award encourages our senior pupils to develop initiative, independence and a strong sense of service.

Our small class sizes ensure that every child receives individual attention, creating plenty of opportunities to hone their skills and build confidence. A wide variety of opportunities is available, and our ‘have a go’ culture ensures that pupils embrace new challenges with enthusiasm.

Pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum, suitable for pupils of all ages and abilities.
