Berkhampstead is a happy, close-knit community where every child is known and celebrated for their unique strengths and individuality. Small enough for teachers to truly understand each child, yet large enough to offer countless opportunities, the school provides a nurturing environment for young personalities to flourish.

Praise is integral to the Berky way of life. Children are rewarded for good behaviour and excellent effort with bonus points that contribute to both individual merit badges and the Inter-House Competition. Exceptional achievements are recognised with commendation certificates awarded in assembly.

From Kindergarten to Year 2, children earn pom-poms for their class jar by demonstrating kindness, effort, or great work. When the big jar is filled, the whole class celebrates with a treat, such as an activity afternoon or a party.
Additional rewards include stickers, Wow Vouchers, and recognition on the Values Tree, celebrating Early Years values of Honesty, Perseverance, Kindness, Trust, and Politeness. Each week, exemplary behaviour is rewarded with the privilege of taking Berky or Edna Bear home for a week, creating a sense of pride and excitement among the youngest learners.
From the Kindergarten onwards the school is highly effective in meeting its aims to provide a happy, caring, family environment.

The House System is a cherished tradition at Berkhampstead. Established in 1945, the Houses—St George’s, St Andrew’s, St David’s and St Patrick’s - foster camaraderie and friendships beyond teaching groups.
Inter-house competitions, including sports events and the legendary Pancake Challenge, are highlights of the school year. In the Pancake Challenge, pupils race around the MUGA, flipping pancakes in their House colours while being cheered on enthusiastically by the peers. These events bring the school community together, instilling pride and a sense of belonging in every child.
