Drama

Drama at Berkhampstead is an integral part of school life, stimulating and exciting pupils while providing a vital outlet for self-expression. It fosters artistic awareness, imagination and confidence, helping children overcome the challenges of stage fright and build fluency of speech.

Performances Across the School

Drama opportunities at Berkhampstead are embraced eagerly by pupils, with performances enjoyed by staff, children and appreciative audiences alike. Through drama, pupils learn valuable skills such as organisation, teamwork, self-respect, respect for others, discipline and self-awareness.

The journey begins in Early Years with intimate concerts, followed by Pre-Prep Nativity plays, class assemblies and summer productions. From a young age, children grow comfortable on stage, learning to stand tall and speak with confidence. Annual Harvest Festivals, Christmas Nativities, and services at All Saints’ Church provide further opportunities for children to perform in front of larger audiences in a different venue—a challenge they always rise to meet!

Our Own Productions

From Year 2, drama takes on a new dimension with ambitious summer productions which feature singing and instrumental performance, tailored scripts and roles that suit each child, ensuring the productions are both fun and memorable. Year 2 pupils also participate in the Verse Speaking section of the Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts, gaining experience and confidence on a competitive stage.

As pupils progress through the school, the scale and ambition of productions grow. In their final year, they take part in a large-scale performance, with the Year 6 Leavers’ Play being a highlight. Recent Year 6 productions have included Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies, What a Knight!, The Amazing Adventures of Superstan, and the laugh-out-loud Pirates of the Curry Bean.
