Responsibility

Our collaborative approach means that Berkhampstead children are accustomed to having an input and contributing. This gives them the confidence to take on responsibility. The range of opportunities here means that there's always something to take on as children become ready.

Platinum Award

We are immensely proud of our Platinum Award, launched in 2015 to celebrate Berkhampstead’s 70th anniversary. Designed for our senior pupils in Years 5 and 6, this unique initiative provides an exciting opportunity for children to challenge themselves, develop responsibility and achieve more than they ever thought possible.

The award is designed to inspire a thirst for adventure and a willingness to try new things. It aims to nurture healthy lifestyles, a sense of community, and resilience—qualities essential for raising happy, focused and successful children.

An Individual Journey

The Platinum Award celebrates all-round achievement, and each child’s journey is uniquely tailored to their own interests and passions. Participation is optional, but those who opt in create a personalised experience that reflects their strengths and aspirations.

Each participant receives a logbook to track progress in four key areas: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and a Residential Adventure or Expedition. Over the years, children have shown incredible creativity in their pursuits, and we’re always excited to see what they accomplish next.

The Platinum Award is a true testament to our ethos of fostering independence, curiosity and a can-do spirit in every child.

Leaders at Berkhampstead

Leadership opportunities are an integral part of life at Berkhampstead, fostering responsibility, teamwork and confidence.

In Year 6, pupils can be elected as House Captains, where they motivate and inspire their peers. House Captains play a key role in House activities, with a particular highlight being the proud moment of collecting trophies when their House wins.

Year 6 pupils also take on the role of monitors, modelling exemplary behaviour for younger children. They assist with the daily running of the school, take on specific duties, and have the flexibility to shape their role to reflect their strengths. Year 6 monitors are also central to our buddy system, where they support new Year 3 pupils transitioning from Pre-Prep. This system builds friendships and helps younger children quickly feel confident and happy in their new environment.

Involved

Each class from Reception onwards has an elected representative on the School Council and two Year 6 pupils lead the team of reps. We also have an Eco Committee, with representatives from all over the School. Our children are used to being consulted, and they learn the responsibility of valuing others’ viewpoints and accommodating them.
