Pastoral Care
“Happy children learn best.” Mrs Andrews, Founder of Berkhampstead School
Pastoral care lies at the heart of everything we do. While families value our strong academic outcomes and track record of scholarships and Grammar School success, it is our focus on well-being that underpins this achievement.

Well-being encompasses physical, emotional, social and mental health. In today’s fast-moving world, children face increasing pressures, and we equip them with the tools to cope with these.
Pupils take part in weekly well-being lessons, including Circle Time and CWB (Citizenship and Well-Being), covering key life skills such as mental health, relationships, e-safety, healthy living and personal development. These are enhanced through initiatives such as Anti-Bullying Week.
A Structured Approach to Pastoral Care
We’re committed to supporting every child, every day. Our pastoral care is built on three layers:
- Universal support available to all pupils as part of daily school life (including trusted adults, safe spaces and form tutors)
- Targeted support for those who may need a little extra help (including tailored check-ins and bespoke 1:1 support)
- Specialist support for pupils requiring more individualised care (including ELSA, play therapy and counselling).
A Culture of Kindness

Our classrooms are inclusive, supportive environments where children feel confident to express themselves. Our dedicated well-being pod offers all children a calm, nurturing space for reflection and support.
Kindness is actively celebrated through Kindness Cups - awarded each half term - alongside other reward systems across the school. Respect, empathy and inclusion are central to our community, and unkind behaviour is never tolerated.
Preparing Children for Life
Our strapline – Small Classes, Happy Children, Excellent Results - reflects our belief that children thrive and learn best when they feel safe, supported and understood.
Assemblies, leadership opportunities and initiatives such as School Council, Eco Committee and the Platinum Award, encourage children to develop confidence, independence and resilience, always guided by our school motto Perseverantia Vincit - perseverance wins.
